The role of sleep in stress management

A good sleep when facing the hardest time can make a real difference. Indeed, contributing to the regulation of emotional functioning, sleep plays a crucial role in stress management.

According to a study published by our research group, during March 2020 lockdown, Italian poor sleepers were most likely to adopt coping strategies dangerous to health as compared to good sleepers.

Cigarettes, alcohol and junk food consumption, along with other indices of a proper lifestyle, worsened in parallel with the deterioration of sleep quality. The study allowed researchers to identify poor sleepers as the population who paid the highest price for social isolation. Moreover, these findings shed light on the relationship binding poor sleep quality and cardio-metabolic diseases, highlighting the role played by lifestyle and maladaptive coping.
